When it comes to hobbies, we all have something that sparks joy and provides a sense
of fulfillment. For some, its gardening, for others, it’s painting. For me, it’s collecting
Starbucks cups. Yes, you read that right—those iconic, beautifully designed Starbucks
cups have become more than just a container for my morning coffee or tea; they’ve
become a passion. “Why Starbucks cups?” It’s a question I’ve been asked more times than I can count. But for me, it started innocently enough. I bought my first Starbucks tumbler because I liked the design—sleek, with a clean aesthetic. Then, I saw another design that caught my eye, and soon enough, I was on the hunt for unique cups every time I walked into a Starbucks.
Each cup tells a story. Some are from limited-edition collections, others are
location-specific, and each one feels like a small piece of who I am. Over time, what
began as an occasional purchase became a full-fledged collection. I love when
someone spots a Starbucks cup, they have not seen me with, and they grab it to add to
my collection. I often get told it’s a complete waste of money to own so many cups. But
truthfully, I don’t care. I like what I like. Honestly in my defense I am not wasting money
as I use my points to purchase cups. When others want me to purchase cups for them,
I scan my card and get additional points to go towards my new cups.
One of the main reasons I love collecting Starbucks cups is the artistry involved. Every
season, Starbucks releases new collections, often inspired by trends, culture, or specific
locations. The designs range from minimalist patterns to intricate illustrations. It’s a
blend of creativity and function that resonates with me. For instance, Starbucks’ “Been
There” series features designs that reflect different cities, countries, and regions. I have
not started collecting that series, but I love picking up a cup whenever I travel for my
friend who collects them—she says it’s a functional souvenir that reminds her of the
places she has visited or her friends have visited, and each one brings a little bit of that
place into her daily routine. I have to say, they are super cute, and I am trying my
hardest not to start collecting them. Right now, my favorite cups to collect are the
studded ones. I probably own 10 different studded cups. My favorite two are the matte
black one and the pastel pink one. Both where limited editions and I was so happy to
be one of the few people who owns one. Both those cups re-sell online for over $100.
I have thought about selling them but…NOPE I love them too much.
Like any collection, part of the fun comes from the hunt. Some Starbucks cups are
available everywhere, while others are rare finds, sold only in specific locations or
during limited timeframes. It’s always exciting when you stumble upon a cup you didn’t
even know. The thrill of finding a special edition cup or snagging one that’s been
sold out online adds an element of adventure to the hobby. And then there’s the
community. There are countless online groups, forums, and social media accounts
dedicated to Starbucks cup collecting. It’s an entire subculture! Connecting with other
collectors allows me to trade cups (which I have not done yet, but am interested), find
out about upcoming releases, and share in the joy of a new addition to the collection.
It’s fascinating how a simple object can create such a strong sense of connection with
people from all over the world.
Collecting Starbucks cups is more than just a hobby—it also became a form of self-
care. In a world that’s often fast-paced and chaotic, having something as simple and
personal as a collection can be grounding. Each cup serves as a small reminder to slow
down, sip my coffee or tea, and take a moment for myself. This is so important for me
because too often I forget to just take a moment for myself.
Plus, there’s something so satisfying about displaying my collection. Whether I have
them arranged on a shelf or sitting in my kitchen cabinets, looking at the assortment of
colors and designs remind me of the joy they’ve brought me. Occasionally, I take them
out the cabinet and snap some beautiful photos of them.
Some of my cups I haven't even used, and it cracks me up when I pull one out that has not been used. I always say, hey girl you’re new. I love when the holidays come around and Starbucks gives away a free red cup with a holiday drink purchase. I try to get there early because too often they sell out. I mean I have not witnessed a sell out since I am usually there when they open or my favorite barista will hold one aside for me until I come in. Yes, I have a favorite Starbucks that I go to, and they always look out for me.
Whether you collect Starbucks cups, stamps, or something entirely different, the
important thing is finding a hobby that brings you happiness. In a world full of
responsibilities and stress, these small pleasures can make all the difference. So, the
next time you’re at Starbucks, take a look at the cup wall—you might just find something
that sparks a little joy in your life, too. I know I have!
